D-STAR Operation

Tips and Tricks

Why do I need to register?

You do not need to be registered to talk on D-STAR.

You DO have to be registered to request a repeater to link to other locations and you have to be registered to access D-STAR from the Internet such as Pi-Star, SharkRF or many other hotspot and access point devices with your own callsign.

We recommend reregistering to get the full benefits of this exciting mode.

Why am I only hearing one side of a conversation?

If one of the stations is using callsign routing and the other is simply talking through a repeater or hotspot that is linked to the gateway. You will hear the person that is on the linked repeater but not the person using callsign routing that is not linked into the reflector.

It could be that both people are on a repeater that is linked and one is set to transmit to the gateway and the other is not. This is most common and isn't a bad thing but people just need to understand what is happening.

May I unlink the repeaters on the network?

Absolutely! This is the point of the network. While most of the repeaters are defaulted to REF019B, you are more than welcome to link them to other reflectors. Be aware that the repeaters will relink to 19B after about 30min of inactivity.

I can hit the repeater but others can't hear me?

You maybe only talking locally on the repeater. Open the Callsign menu on your radio and make sure the R1 and R2 callsign match the repeaters with R2 showing "CALLSIGN G" If the R2 is not setup with the callsign space G, your audio will stay local to the repeater but you will still hear any audio coming from the network the repeater may be listening too.

Can you help me with my repeater?

This is a primary goal of our group, we gladly help clubs across the state and surrounding area with the hurdles of repeater setup and maintenance. If you have a repeater you are trying to get on the air, feel free to reach out and we maybe able to assist.

Why does the link seem to drop while I am talking to someone?

There is a lot of routing that needs to go on, sometimes if you double with another station or if you key up before the roger beep on the repeater it can kill the link temporarily to the reflector. Make sure you leave pauses between key ups to make sure others are able to access the network.
